Siemens wins ‘largest ever’ rolling stock order
The Desiro ML
SIEMENS Mobility Division has received an order from the Belgian state rail operator SNCB for what it claims to be its largest-ever rolling stock order.
Belgian National Railways is to invest 1.43 billion euros (£1.13 billion) in 305 three-car Desiro Mainline electric multiple units.
The first trains will be manufactured at the Siemens plant in Krefeld-Uerdingen in Germany, beginning in the summer of 2009 and are scheduled for delivery in the period from 2011 to 2016, Siemens said.
The design is based on the design adopted for the new Siemens platform for regional trains. The Desiro ML can accommodate 280 passengers and has a top speed of 160 km/h (100 mph).
The order is the second for Siemens’ new-generation Desiro ML design. Angel Trains ordered 16 three-car sets for Germany regional operator Mittelrheinbahn last year.
