Two-way radio links speed response to incidents

Speedy response: a BTP officer communicates by Airwave.

SOUTHEASTERN’S railway enforcement officers are now able to work even more closely with British Transport Police – thanks to new radio access.

The officers are sharing access to the Airwave radio network, a first in railway security improvement.

Since 2005, 60 rail enforcement officers, trained and accredited by BTP, have been deployed across Southeastern on high-profile patrols to deter fare evasion and anti-social, and provide a reassuring presence for customers.

Now, centrally run radio control from the company’s London CCTV suite will give immediate contact with BTP officers via two-way radio.

This will speed incident response times and eliminate the need for mobiles and landlines with risk of poor reception.

Southeastern Train’s head of crime and security Paul Nicholas said:  “Access to the Airwave radio system will help our enforcement officers work even more closely with BTP in dealing with the minority of people who try to spoil the use of our railway for the law-abiding majority.”
