'One third of Underground running' on strike morning
TRANSPORT for London says a third of Underground services are running during a strike by members of the RMT and TSSA unions.
The walkouts are connected with a dispute over job losses, but staff at three maintenance depots are also striking over pay.
Most Underground lines are affected to some extent by today's walkouts. Transport for London said this was the situation at 09.00:
Bakerloo Line: no service between Queen’s Park and Harrow & Wealdstone
Central Line: all stations open
Circle Line: no service
District Line: service between Barking and Wimbledon only
Jubilee Line: no service between Finchley Road and Stratford (via central London)
Metropolitan Line: no City service between Baker Street, Liverpool Street and Aldgate
Northern Line: ‘good service’, although some stations are closed
Piccadilly Line: limited service
Victoria Line: limited service
Waterloo & City Line: minor delays
Services are running normally on the Docklands Light Railway, London Overground and tram routes in south London.
TfL has brought an extra 100 buses into use on key routes and boosted river services. Other measures include taxi marshals and additional staff at stations to advise passengers about their travel options today.
The dispute is mainly over LU plans to shed 800 staff and reduce the opening hours of ticket offices at many suburban stations, which it says are selling only a ‘handful’ of tickets in an average hour. LU also wants some ticket office staff to move to ‘frontline’ roles on concourse gatelines and platforms.
Both the RMT and TSSA unions are bitterly opposing the changes, which they claim are jeopardising safety.
Staff at three Alstom maintenance depots on the Jubilee and Northern Lines have also walked out, in a separate dispute over pay.
